Don’t wake me, I feel like sleeping in
Listening to music is much more than just playing it and being in the vicinity. Actually hearing the words and trying to understand the meaning brings the songs to a whole new level. It’s easy to let it become background noise, and sometimes you may have a CD that you’ve heard a hundred times but don’t know the lyrics too. Why is this important? Well sometimes it isn’t, and you find out the words are terrible and don’t make any sense, but who’s to say if it means something to the writer? Other times, paying attention to the words and following the story that they tell makes it true entertainment. A lot of songs have intricate stylings and clever wording that goes unnoticed probably 70% of the time. Many artists write from experience too, so you may find you can relate to them through their music. I don’t like many songs without words actually, That’s what becomes background noise. I love to learn the words to my favorite songs, and nothing beats being able to sing them along with the band at a live performance. When does a song become more than just 3-4 minutes of words and chords? When it makes you feel alive, whole and ready for anything all at the same time.
Yet I lament. Because the state of todays music makes me not want to listen to the words. They are inane, truncated ideas or completely random sentence fragments set to a generic beat that has no place in my memory. I truly mourn the loss of the once great music age, because a change in music means a change in everything.
Know Music, Know Life.
